7/28- A few updates:
-The water “element” is towards the end of the course and coincidently provides a scenic background for a wedding taking place on Killington’s property on race day. We hope that everyone is through the course by the time the guests are being seated but we are still going to take necessary precautions so we don’t ruing the moment for the new bride and groom. If you haven’t entered the water by 4:00pm you will be re-routed around the pond (which you might be happy about by that point).
-We will have a very limited number of pfds for the water element. Now you can’t skip it because you can’t swim! If you are afraid of lake water, time to be a Spartan and overcome your fears. Get the person next to you to guide you through it.
-We still need some volunteers for the race. If you have friends or family attending it’s a great way for them to see some of the course (otherwise no course access for spectators) and earn a free entry for any future race (except the Spartan Beast). Free food, free beer ticket (for anyone 21 and over), and a free t-shirt for those that help. We specifically need volunteers for our 2nd shift (noon to 5:30pm). Email firstname.lastname@example.org if interested.
7/22 – This weekend (not just the race) is shaping up to be epic. Starting with the dinner Friday night going all the way through Saturday night at the Pickle Barrel. I just finished up my last bit of scouting and this is going to be a tough and nasty course. I don’t usually use those two words together but this time is the exception. Those racing early might be the lucky ones doing all the work breaking through grass and vegetation sometimes as tall as your chest. (Watch your foot placement as there are plenty of hidden holes out there). Lots of bushwhacking, utilization of existing mountain bike and hiking trails, and some dirt roads. There will be swimming (~100 yards). We’ll have 5 aid stations on the course with ONLY water. If I were racing I would definitely consider carrying hydration and fuel (i.e. gels, bar, etc) as many of you will be out there for 4+ hours and you will definitely suffer without getting some calories. Also, I’m not going to go overboard marking this course like I do with the shorter races. If you pay attention, you will be fine. Don’t blindly follow the heard in front of you and keep your eye out for turns, arrows, and the ribbons. This is the BEAST, we aren’t going to hold your hand through this course so show up prepared. And as always, be ready to have a blast getting your butt kicked and making some memories. I hope to make it Saturday night to the party to personally congratulate all of you.
1/2/11: This is going to be a good test for all your Spartans out there in the New England and Tri-State area. I scouted Killington right before their first snowfall and it was cold, wet, dark and I was alone on the mountain. I left with another reminder of how awesome this area is. By the time you attack this beast it will be early August and you’ll probably be wishing it was raining while you climb 1600’ feet to the top of Skye Peak under the summer sun. I need another good scouting once the snow melts so keep checking back for updates but I do have a basic course laid out. For the most part this is going to be a big 10-12 mile loop around the resort complete with a steep and long bushwhack, a short swim in shallow water, plenty of obstacles, and the usual fire jump and gladiator pit. I’m trying to see if I can work in a memorization test that will reward those of you who are used to working your prefrontal lobes and also a log carry that will certainly make things more frustrating. But, with frustration and challenge comes greater reward, right?
