Race Director's NotesMessage from Nick

Two words come to mind: “private ranch”. To me, that says green light to create whatever fun Spartan Sprint adventure you want to imagine, and my imagination went wild at this venue. Definitely bring a change of clothes and a towel to this race, as this is Texas and anything goes in Texas, right? Rockyhill Ranch is known for its single track mountain biking trails and we will see how well you can navigate these while jumping in and out of water/mud the entire route. 3.1 miles of creativity awaits those that want to brave this Sprint Spartan. Spartans……are you ready? Gladiators, Slippery Mountain, FIRE, and our 5’ Over/Under/Through obstacles are just a few of the surprise’s that await you.

100% of net proceeds go to The Max Cure Foundation

All monies go to Dell Children's Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for pediatric cancer research. The formation of The Max Cure Foundation/RunTex Fund at Dell Children's Hospital for this purpose will be announced.

This Children's Spartan Race is the inaugural children's race with the philanthropic twist described above being conducted by Spartan Races, Inc. that will hopefully be the first of many of these races to be held throughout Texas and elsewhere in this country and beyond. In addition to helping MSKCC as indicated above, each race is anticipated to provide proceeds to a local charity devoted to pediatric cancer causes.

My friend David Plotkin (introduced to me by Michael Emanuel) founded The Max Cure Foundation following the diagnosis of Max on the eve of his fourth birthday in 2007. Since its inception, Max Cure has raised over $1.3 million, $700,000 of which has been donated to MSKCC for the underwriting of the laboratory, a one of a kind cell therapy lab to advance the cause of pediatric cancer, with an additonal $200,000 having been donated to other pediatric cancer causes. It is the goal of The Max Cure Foundation to raise $5.0 million for the underwriting of the lab while at the same time, assisting other pediatric cancer charities throughout the country. Max Cure Foundation focuses not only on finding a cure for childhood cancers and for seeking to discover less toxic treatments for those children afflicted with the disease, but also, and perhaps somewhat unique in doing so, focusing on child survivors who suffer from the emotional and physical side effects from the treatments they endure in overcoming their disease.

Joe Desena, the founder of Spartan Races, Inc., was immediately drawn to The Max Cure Foundation and its mission to help kids with cancer, deciding to sponsor children's races with the slogan BE BRAVE in what he hopes will be a nationwide effort to teach children what it means to overcome obstacles and to BE BRAVE. Take a second to download this video: https://www.yousendit.com/download/bFIHQ3QwQXA1UjQwTVE9PQ. I introduced David and Joe to Paul Carrozza of RunTex who, like Joe, was immediately drawn to the cause - recognizing that by partnering with The Max Cure Foundation and Spartan Races and all they want to do for children with cancer and their families, would be a "no brainer" and would allow him (Paul) to ratchet up his passion for running to a point where he, like David Plotkin and Joe Desena, can "make a difference."
