Race Director's NotesMessage from Mike
1/6/11: The Georgia International Horse Park was one of the sites for the 1996 Summer Olympics and thus a fitting choice for the Atlanta stop of the Spartan Series. Chionis of Sparta was a (supposedly) three-time Olympian in the early B.C. days of the Olympic Games, illustrating Sparta’s commitment to the Olympics. This course doesn’t
have the eleTaxion gain as some of the others so bring your
speed and run hard. It can be a fast course for those that
so choose and have the abilities to back it up. What it
lacks in elevation it makes up for in twisty single track,
quick ups and downs, and some natural obstacles that we
have identified hiding in this playground. This stood the
test of the Olympic Mountain Bike Course and we are going
to squeeze everything we can from it to create a fun and
challenging course. Even if you’ve explored these trails before this will still be a novel experience for you. There won’t be any shortage of mud, barbed wire, and built obstacles, either!
4/22/11: Finishing up some final things before the
team heads out to start building this monster of a course. I
promise a fantastic time for anyone of any ability level. Looks
like it’s going to be hot so our sensitive side
is showing through and we will place an aid station about
2/3 of the way through the course with just water. We’ve
planned a bunch of cool and challenging obstacles including
(but not limited to) the first ever Spartan Steeplechase
Jumps right after the start (we are on the Steeplechase
field, you know…) two long muddy barbed wire crawls,
swamp-whacking, a huge cargo net climb, and, depending
how things look, a run down a river. Unfortunately,
given the Georgia Forest Service burn-ban, there won’t
be any fire jumping, but you’ll still have plenty
to scream and shout about along the course. Word
on the street is that Hobie Call will be racing in pursuit
of his $100K series prize, here’s a great video
of our Austin race which mentions Hobie’s great
start to the year.
Finally, in the spirit of Earth Day, let’s make every effort to carpool to the event! See you all in a week!
